Corporate Safety Manager (SFMGRW - WA)

JOB TITLE: Corporate Safety Manager

LOCATION: Corporate Office (Edmonds, WA) with extensive travel to facilities in Alaska and

Washington

SALARY RANGE: $90,000 - $130,000

Our group of companies operate several seafood processing plants in the coastal areas of Alaska and in the greater Seattle area of Washington. We employ over 3,000 people during our peak summer season. The Corporate Safety Manager, located in our Edmonds office, provides leadership and oversight in all areas of workplace safety. This is a highly technical position that requires excellent attention to detail and a positive, professional, and collaborative work style. Works with plant personnel to develop, implement, and maintain written programs, inspection forms and guidelines, training curricula, policies and practices to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (such as OSHA, AKOSH, L&I, and AKWCB). Apprises leaders of changes to regulations and practical approaches that ensure compliance. Serves as a consultant to our operations team, assisting them to maintain compliance and mitigate risks. Provides training and guidance to all levels of the organization in areas of responsibility. Completes and submits required reports. Initiates risk management and mitigation strategies to reduce worker’s compensation claims and increase plant safety and compliance. Visits production facilities at least annually to audit programs and records, train staff and conduct physical inspections of the site. Maintains organized paper and electronic files of pertinent records. This is an exempt position (not paid for overtime) and reports to the Corporate EHS Manager. Onsite office presence is required four days a week and may be required more frequently as needed.

RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Oversees all worker safety compliance programs throughout the organization.
  • Develops, implements and updates written programs, inspection guidelines, forms, training materials, policies, and practices to ensure all locations meet or exceed regulatory requirements.
  • Stays up to date on regulatory changes and initiatives and apprises managers and leaders of pertinent issues.
  • Creates practical, proactive solutions for ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Conducts site specific training in areas of responsibility. Ensures all employees are properly trained and/or certified for their positions.
  • Monitors plant records for completion and accuracy.
  • Audits each facility at least annually. Identifies deficiencies and areas for improvement, ranks in order of risk, sets deadlines, and follows through to verify abatement.
  • Acts as an in-house resource on technical issues within areas of responsibility.
  • Responds to agency requests and notices.
  • Represents the company at industry meetings.
  • Develops systematic paper and electronic records retention program.
  • Works to continuously improve processes and documentation.
  • Develops long-term professional working relationships with employees, stakeholders, and auditors.
  • Represents the company professionally and appropriately in interactions with others.
  • Maintains accurate, compliant, and organized paper and electronic business records.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial safety preferred (may be substituted by work experience).
  • Five or more years of similar safety related work experience, preferably in the Alaska seafood industry or other manufacturing settings.
  • CSP certifications preferred.
  • Working knowledge of safety regulations that apply to seafood production in Alaska and Washington, such as use of ammonia refrigeration, forklifts, small cranes, PPE, general industrial safety and hygiene. These include, but are not limited to, regulations promulgated by AKOSH, OSHA, L&I, USCG and DOT.
  • Ability to research, read, comprehend, and articulate in layman’s terms the meaning of regulations.
  • Experience in developing and delivering training to adult learners.
  • Influential, collaborative, positive, professional demeanor. Effective oral and written communications.
  • Advanced technical writing skills.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Teams).
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently to remote areas of Alaska and work in seafood processing plants for extended periods of time. This includes traveling and working in inclement weather and in seafood production plants (inherent hazards include exposure to fish and shellfish, moving machinery, wet floors, noise, forklift traffic, etc.). Significant travel during the months of June, July and August to remote areas of Alaska.
